Celebrate some normalcy with a bang

Hey, can you believe it’s almost July 4th already? This statement about our annual national celebration, as well as almost every other holiday, has become something of a running joke with TV talk show hosts / comedians over the past couple of years. You can expect to see small montages of local TV news showing people saying the same thing… Can you believe it is already (fill in the opportunity here)? They will follow up with the talk show host smugly saying something like “Yes, that happens around this time every year.” It’s become as much of a holiday tradition as every store that advertises on TV with a giant sale (fill in the opportunity here again).

But, this year we’re all going to be thinking about something a little different. I’m sure we will all be grateful if we can go out for the celebration together, sit on a blanket and gaze up at the sky to watch fireworks again. Doing this was one of the things we all took for granted a few years ago, but I’m sure we’ll enjoy it a lot more in 2021.

Speaking of appreciation, I’ll send a big thank you to our Golden Lions Club for once again coming together to produce the city’s July 4th Community Festival. Yes, it’s back and will take place on (can’t believe I’m typing this) July 4th. This year it falls on a Sunday.

They’ve been planning this for the city for… Oh, dammit, it’s been decades. I think Buffalo Bill was still alive when they started doing this. Okay maybe not that long ago, but I can tell you that when they took over this project my hair was brown and hadn’t started to fall out yet so it’s been a very long time.

Since it is presented by the Lions Club, I will only give you an idea of where they hold it. Yes, at Lions Park. Sometimes we like to keep it simple in Golden. The Lions Club July 4th Festival was held at Lions Park on July 4th. Once you hit the age of 50, you will start to enjoy this stuff a lot more.

For those of you who have lived here awhile, you know the exercise. Just show up to the park in the afternoon, hang out, eat, drink, do fun things, and look up after dark. But for those of you who may not have been to this festival, I better elaborate a bit more. Otherwise, you might find yourself sitting on my lawn and missing everything. No, I’m not a lion, I just look like it when I wake up in the morning.

OK, so first of all, where’s Lions Park? It’s at the west end of 10th Street near the Golden Rec Center. You can not miss it. There are a bunch of permanent picnic tables and small shelter structures, they will have a stage with two bands performing all afternoon and evening as well as food trucks, games and activities. for children and the famous beer stand where volunteers will pour cold Coors as well as beer from Golden City Brewery and Bonacquisti Wines.

The bands will be Ryan Chrys and the Roughcuts playing Modern Outlaw Country from 3 pm to 6 pm, followed by rock band Something Underground from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm Of course, once the groups are finished there will be a fire. ‘artifice. Lots of fireworks. It’s a great spectacle. It starts around 9:30 p.m.

Now a very important Golden Lions Club tradition that I must mention is their raffle. They’ll be selling tickets for it all over town for next week. This is how they pay for the fireworks, but it also raises a lot of money for the civic projects they set up for the city. They used the money to build everything from public toilets to dugout canoes at local baseball parks. You’ll see guys selling them in Lions Club yellow vests and they get lots of prizes every year including a $ 1,000 cash prize. Tickets cost $ 5 each or 5 for $ 20. Winners are announced throughout the day, but you don’t have to be there to win.

So this golden July 4th adventure is ready to go. I look forward to seeing some of you in the park again. But, please leave the fireworks to the pros, okay? You don’t need a road trip to Wyoming.
