Kamal Haasan’s Vikram sets the box office on fire

After a string of theatrical blockbusters from the Telugu and Kannada film industries, it’s now Kollywood’s turn to set the box office on fire – all thanks to actor Kamal Haasan’s stellar return to the big screen after four years. with his latest film VikramName.

According to trade estimates, the film which hit the big screens on June 3 has so far generated over ₹200 crore in the worldwide box office collection.

‘Well received’

“#Vikram is stepping into the raw club of 200 cr WW,” Ramesh Bala, an entertainment industry tracker, tweeted on Tuesday. In another tweet, Bala said VikramName crossed the $2 million gross mark in the United States, which is a rare feat for a Tamil film.

“It’s a straight blockbuster. The film is well received not only in Tamil but in all languages. This marks the end of Kamal Haasan’s hiatus and people have welcomed him with open arms,” said Kamal Gianchandani, President of the Multiplex Association of India (MAI). Gianchandani added that the film sees occupancy rates of 85-90% not only on weekends, but also on weekdays despite its non-holiday release.

Vishal Sawhney, director and CEO of Carnival Cinemas, said: VikramName has been a hit at the box office since its release. “Film is doing exceptionally well in Carnival Cinemas. We need such strong content featuring mega stars that bodes well for cinemas post-lockdown.

Post-Covid Success

The film also became Kollywood’s biggest post-pandemic hit. Several films released, including that of Vijay The beast and that of Suriya Etharkum Thunindhavan, did not do as expected while Ajith Kumar Valimai grossed over ₹200 crore despite mixed reactions.

On the other hand, director SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus RRR (Telugu) and actor Yash’s KGF-Chapter 2 (Kannada) broke several Bollywood box office records, bringing South Indian films to national prominence. By trade estimates, the two films earned over ₹1,000 crore each in worldwide collections.

“If the content is good, then the sky is the limit. This we have seen in the case of RRR, KGF Chapter-2, Pushpa and many other movies. In the south, a galaxy of big stars offers quality content that is reflected in the box office numbers. That is why VikramName is also doing very well,” said Rajendra Singh Jyala, Director of Programming at Inox Leisure Ltd.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagraj, the film’s case features Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil and Suriya in a cameo. The film has also been dubbed into Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada.
