Kandal Prisoners Ask for Clemency Ahead of Water Festival

Twenty-six inmates from Kandal Provincial Jail have applied for clemency on the upcoming water festival.

Speaking at a meeting on August 26, the deputy governor of Kandal province, Nob Dara, asked his officials to strictly follow legal procedures when considering applications, which include sentence reductions. and graces.

He said a thorough assessment was needed to ensure that only fully rehabilitated prisoners would be selected to reintegrate into society and rejoin their families.

“Only detainees meeting these conditions can benefit from clemency. They must have realized their place in society and be prepared to be good citizens,” he said as quoted by Kandal provincial administration.

He said the 26 prisoners assessed should be role models for other prisoners and encourage positive change in the prison population. This would include participation in all available professional training and integration programs.

Kandal provincial prison chief Em Nimol said the 26 prisoners included three women. A list of their names was submitted to the committee for review and evaluation.

Cambodia allows clemency for prisoners on several occasions, such as Khmer New Year, Visak Bochea Day, and Water Festival.
