Odias in the Netherlands holds boat sailing ceremony – Odisha Diary

Amsterdam: Odias, a non-resident based in the Netherlands, hosted the fifth Kartik Purnima celebrations and boating ceremony with much fanfare and religious fervor. Organized by the Sociocultural Association of Odia, the Netherlands (OSCAN), the Grand Festival brought together hundreds of Odias and non-Odias based in different parts of the Netherlands, as well as their families, friends and relatives. The celebration venue De Ruimte Auditorium in the city of Almere has been elegantly and aesthetically decorated with colorful Sambalpuri Dupattas, Pipili Chandua lights and a multiple collection of paper boats suitable for the occasion. The whole atmosphere wore the sumptuous look of a mini Odisha and was stirred with an amazing festive spirit. Since this year’s Kartik Purnima was observed without covid restrictions, unusual interest and unprecedented excitement has been seen among the participants. Launched in 2017 with the humble attempt of a small group of 15 people, the Festival has multiplied over the years and has reached the peak of a gigantic annual fair in Europe.

The Festival was opened with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the guest of honor, founder of the Dutch organization “Quality For Life (QFL)” Lelita Bindraban. QFL is currently engaged in implementing several social welfare projects in remote villages in Puri district of Odisha. Addressing the gathering, Ms. Bindraban praised the OSCAN team for their sincere efforts to project, promote, propagate and popularize the rich art, vibrant culture, golden tradition and heroic heritage of Odisha in the Nederlands. In his goodwill message, the President of the World Odisha Society, Kishore Dwibedi, complemented the noble initiatives of OSCAN to spread the essence and fragrance of the Odisha brand in Europe.

The highlight of the festival was the sailing of beautifully decorated boats through the canals of the Netherlands amid arati by ladies and the chanting of “Aa, Kaa Maa Bai”. The whole atmosphere reverberated with the sounds of Haribol, Huluhuli and conch blowing by the participants.

The special attraction of the Mega Event was the presentation of a spectacular cultural extravaganza by the members of OSCAN. Vivid and varied entertainment includes recital of soul-soothing Jagannath Bhajans, enactment of Bhagabat Tungi, boat-making competition between different cities in the Netherlands, painting competition among children on the theme of Kartika Purnima , the best dress contest in female, male and children categories and display cum distribution of delicious Odia delicacies like Aoo Chop, Jhalmudhi, Aloo Potala Rasa, Cheese Ball Curry and Suji Kakara Pitha.

OSCAN’s outstanding core organizing team primarily responsible for the massive success of this year’s Festival includes President Saswat Padhi and senior members like Sushil Das Mahapatra, Anshuman Mishra, Paritosh Mahapatra, Nilamadhab Mishra, Somanath Lenka, Lopamudra Nayak, Deepak Parida, Debadatta Das, Aurobindo Ghadai, Leoshree Mahapatra and Suvendu Acharya.

Kartik Purnima Celebration – 2022 has been supported by institutions such as AAONXT from Odisha, Nobel Hypotheken, Jansensmit Makelaars and Taxeteurs from Netherlands.
