Tacoma Light Trail Parade, Live Events Kick Off Friday

The Tacoma Light Trail, Tacoma’s free winter art festival, kicks off a series of live events on Friday, starting with a parade of lights at 5:30 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring their lighted gear – tutus, umbrellas, or flashing shoes if you have them – to the parade. The parade will begin at the University of Washington in Tacoma campus and end in the parking lot of the Tacoma Art Museum.

In addition to the parade, people can watch a circus act on a 30-foot crane, musicians, poets and community art from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in a covered room in the parking lot of the Museum of tacoma art.

Other live events will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on January 8, 14 and 15 at the Tollefson Plaza.

Each evening, outdoor shows, community art, shadow play, fireplaces to warm up and free hot tea will be offered. Participants over the age of 5 are asked to wear masks and maintain a social distance of 6 feet.

In its sophomore year, the Tacoma Light Trail was started by Rosemary Ponnekanti, musician, writer and former art critic for The News Tribune which also hosts the annual Ocean Fest in Tacoma.

“This year we invite everyone to ‘be the light’ on the Light Trail,†said Ponnekanti. “It’s so powerful when the whole community comes together under the light. The goal of the Tacoma Light Trail is to bring light to dark times and to unify our community through things we all need – hope, truth, understanding, justice, peace – which are symbolized by light.

The Tacoma Light Trail opened on December 31, and features illuminated sculptures, paintings, and video projections at approximately 40 locations in Tacoma. The art is on view from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. until January 16.
